You Can Manage Projects Successfully Without a PMP Certification

Although many project managers strive for the Project Management Professional (PMP) certification, you are not required to have it to perform your duties. On the contrary, a lot of the top project managers in the industry lack even the most basic project management degrees and certifications!

The most important abilities for a project manager are organizational, planning, and social abilities. These talents are valued in other businesses just as much, and schools even make an effort to equip students with them throughout their academic careers. And while the PMP program instructs you on correct project methodology and stresses best practices, it still significantly relies on your unique experiences and skills.

You can try evaluating your project management abilities first and/or acquiring a little more project management experience if you'd like to work in project management but don't want to spend the money on a PMP course. Apply for the PMP certification only when you are certain that it is the right job for you.

What Really Counts

The type of certification you possess or lack, as well as the type of schooling you have had, are ultimately irrelevant to clients. They are concerned that you will deliver a project that is on schedule, within your agreed-upon budget, and of acceptable quality. The ultimate mark of a project manager is performance, not arbitrary certificates or initials after your name.
