What Is LAN?

A local-area network (LAN) is considered to be a computer network which would span a relatively small area. Most often, a LAN is being confined to a single room, building or group of buildings; however, one LAN could be connected to other LANs over any distance utilizing telephone lines as well as radio waves.

A system of LANs which would be connected in this way is called a wide-area network (WAN). The difference between a LAN and WAN is that the wide-area network would be spanning a relatively large geographical area. Typically, a WAN would be consisting of two or more local-area networks (LANs) and would be often connected through public networks. If you wish to have more information regarding LAN, you could have it by the prep courses being offered at SPOTO Club.

Nodes on a LAN

Most LANs would be connected to workstations and personal computers. Each node, representing individual computer in a LAN which would have its own CPU with which it executes programs, but it also considered being able to access data and devices anywhere on the LAN. This would mean that many users could share expensive devices, like laser printers, as well as data. Users could also utilize the LAN to communicate with each other, by sending an email or by engaging in chat sessions.

LANs would be capable of transmitting data at very fast rates, much faster than data could be transmitted over a telephone line; but the distances would be limited and there is also a limit on the number of computers that could be attached to a single LAN.

Types of Local-Area Networks (LANs)

There are many different types of LANs, with Ethernets would be the most common for PCs. Most Apple Macintosh networks would be based on Apple's AppleTalk network system, which would be built into Macintosh computers. The following characteristics would differentiate one LAN from another:

Topology: The geometrical arrangement of devices on the network. For example, devices could be arranged in a ring or in a straight line.

Protocols: The rules as well as encoding specifications for transferring data. The protocols would also be determining whether the network uses a peer-to-peer or client/server architecture.

Media: Devices could be connected by coaxial cables, twisted-pair wire, or fiber optic cables. Some networks do without connecting media altogether, as well as communicating instead via radio waves.

Deploying a Wireless LAN

Wireless networks are considered to be relatively easy to implement these days, especially when it would be compared to the prospect of having to route wires when deploying a new wired network or overhauling an existing one. The first step in planning a wireless LAN deployment should for deciding on your wireless networking technology standard. Keep in mind that the standard you would be required to accommodate your network access points and routers as well as the entire collection of wireless NICs (network interface cards) for your computers as well as other network resources.

Related Jobs: LAN Network Administrator

The LAN network administrator would be considered responsible for maintaining an organization's local area network. In most cases, the LAN would be spanning a single geographical site, like a corporate office. The responsibilities of LAN network administrator would include: installing LAN network components, tracking as well as renewing licenses for software and equipment, upgrading LAN network software and hardware, monitoring LAN performance, creating network redundancy and backups to ensuring continuity in the event of network failure, and installing software and hardware so as to ensure local area network security.

Well, now we have gone through some basic information, regarding the LAN. But if you wish to have more details regarding the same, you could have it by enrolling yourself into the training courses, which would be offered by the SPOTO. And you can click here to contact us now! we will share more knowledge.
