The first and most obvious reason in order to take the CCIE Routing and Switching written exam is that it would be the first step toward obtaining the CCIE Routing and Switching certification. Also, you cannot schedule a CCIE lab exam until you have cleared the corresponding written exam. In short, if you wish to have all the professional benefits of a CCIE Routing and Switching certification, you could start by passing the written exam. So, if you wish to have this certification, you would have to go through some good training sessions, which you could gain through the SPOTO.

•    Do I Know This Already?:

Each chapter would begin with a quiz that would be helping you to determine the amount of time you need to expend studying that chapter. If you would score yourself strictly, and you would be missing only one question, you might wish to skip the core NOTE Appendixes D through H and the Glossary are given in the printable, PDF format on the CD. xliv of the chapter and move on to the Foundational Summary section at the end of the chapter, which would be letting you review facts and spend time on other topics. If you miss more than one, you might wish to spend some time reading the chapter or at least reading sections that would be covering the topics about which you know that you are weak in.

•    Foundation Topics:

There are the core sections of each chapter. This would give an explanation of the concepts, protocols, and configuration for the topics in that chapter.

•    Foundation Summary

The Foundational Summary section of this book would be departing from the typical features of the Foundational Summary section of other Cisco Press Exam Certification Guides. This would be a section that doesn’t repeat any details from the Foundational Topics section; instead, it is simply summarized and lists facts related to the chapter but for which a longer or more detailed explanation isn’t warranted.

•    Key topics:

Throughout the Foundational Topic sections, Key Topic icon that has been placed beside the most important areas for review purpose. After reading a chapter, when you are going to do your final preparation for the exam, take the time to flip through the chapters, who would be looking for the Key Topic icons, and review those paragraphs, figures, tables, and lists.

•    Fill In Key Tables from Memory:

The more important tables from the chapters have been copied into the PDF files available on the CD as Appendix G. The tables would have most of the information removed. After printing these mostly empty tables, you could use them to improve your memory of the facts into the table by trying to fill them out. This tool should be quite useful for memorizing key facts. That same CD-only appendix would be containing the completed tables so you could check your work.

•    Key terms and Glossary

The more important terms which would be mentioned in each chapter are listed at the end of each chapter under the heading Definitions. The Glossary, found on the CD that would be coming with this book, lists all the terms from the chapters. When you are studying each chapter, you are going to review the key terms, and for those terms about which you would be unsure of the definition, you could review the short definitions from the Glossary.

So, if you wish to have the CCIE Routing and Switching certification, this book would be quite useful for it. You should also gain the CCIE R&S training that you could gain through the SPOTO.
