IP Routing: OSPF Configuration Guide.
images

Here we are going to discuss how to configure OSPF (Open Shortest Path First), but again there’s lots more to discuss the same, for which you should enlist yourself in the preparation courses offered by the SPOTO. OSPF is considered as an IGP (Interior Gateway Protocol) developed by the OSPF working group of the IETF (Internet Engineering Task Force). OSPF was designed expressively for IP networks as well as for its supports IP subnetting and tagging of externally derived routing information. OSPF would also be allowing the packet authentication and utilizes the IP multicast when sending and receiving packets.

Cisco would be supporting RFC 1253, OSPF Version 2 Management Information Base, since August 1991. The OSPF MIB would be defining an IP routing protocol that would be providing the management information related to OSPF would be supported by Cisco routers.

Finding Feature Information:

Your software release might not be able to support all the features documented in this discussion. For the latest caveats as well as feature information, see Bug Search Tool and the release notes for your platform as well as a software release. If you wish to find information about the features documented in this module and to see a list of the releases in which each feature would be supported, see the feature information table, on the official Website Cisco.

The candidates could make the use of the Cisco Feature Navigator so as to find information about platform support as well as Cisco software image support, which they could find on the site on the Cisco.

Router Coordination for OSPF

Typically OSPF would be requiring the coordination among many internal routers ABRs (Area Border Routers), which are routers that are going to be connected to multiple areas, and ASBRs (Autonomous System Boundary Routers). At least, OSPF-based routers or access servers could be configured with all default parameter values, no authentication, as well as interfaces would be assigned to areas. If you intend to customize your environment, you would be needed to ensure coordinated configurations of all routers.

OSPF Network Type

You would be having the choice of configuring your OSPF network type as either broadcast or NBMA, despite the default media type. Using this feature, you would be able to configure broadcast networks as NBMA networks when, for example, you have routers in your network which do not support multicast addressing. You also could configure NBMA networks like X.25, Frame Relay, as well as SMDS as broadcast networks. This feature would be saving you from the need of configuring neighbors, which would be described in the section of Configuring OSPF for Non-broadcast Networks later on in this module.

Because many routers might be attached to an OSPF network, a designated router would be selected for the network. Special configuration parameters are needed in the designated router selection if the broadcast capability isn’t configured.

These parameters would only be needed to configure in those devices which would be eligible themselves for becoming the designated router or backup which would be designated router, in other words, the routers which would be having a nonzero router priority value.

As there’s lots more to discuss, the candidates are suggested to not to just look in the books and learn as it would be very much difficult for them to apply the bookish knowledge in the hands-on practical exam. Thus it is necessary for them to either build their own CCIE Lab (not recommended though), or they might have to acquire another means to gain access of the relevant materials, for which they might join the courses, which are being offered by the reputed firms like the SPOTO, to help themselves for clearing their lab exams in single attempt.
