Overview and information about the CCNA exam

You have decided to obtain the CCNA certificate. It's a great idea, congratulations! It's a good idea to be familiar with the requirements of the exam before you begin your studies.

This article will provide more details about the exam: the format, passing score, cost, and where to take it.

What are the questions on the CCNA certification examination?

You can expect to answer between 100 and 120 questions in the CCNA 200-301 exam. This means you won't be able to spend too much time thinking, with each question taking around one minute. Although it can seem daunting at first, many questions require less time. To avoid any misunderstandings, take enough time to carefully read each question.

What is the time required to pass the CCNA exam?

We've already said that you shouldn't spend too much time on each question to find the right answer. You may have already used this trick to answer the easiest questions in tests. This will give you self-confidence, and possibly enough points to pass.

This trick won't work on the certification exam, as you don't have permission for any questions to be re-used. Clicking on the "Next” button will record your answer and prevent you from correcting or browsing through the questions again.

What format are the questions for the CCNA exam question?

These types of questions are common on the Cisco exams:
  • Multiple choices (single or multiple answers)
  • Drag-and-drop
  • Fill-in-the-blank
  • Simulation
  • Simlet
  • Testlet

Most of the questions can be answered with either single or multiple choices. The latter will tell you how many answers are available, so it is a good idea to not mark more than one. You might be familiar with fill-in-the-blank and drag-and-drop types.

We recommend that you first view the exam tutorial videos if you are unfamiliar with the three types. Here's a brief overview of each type. You will need to set up a network device in the Simulation type -- possibly by the CLI, or the GUI.

Testlet questions are usually presented in a series of questions. These questions all focus on the same scenario or network topology. The command output will help you solve the problem. You can move back and forth between the questions. However, if you close this Testlet, it will not allow you to go back.

Simlet questions combine a simulation with a Testlet. A set of questions based on the same network topology or scenario will be provided. You won't be given any command output. Instead, you will need to interact with the network devices to correctly answer the questions.

Where can I take the CCNA test? When are they scheduled?

After scheduling one, you must take your exam at a SPOTO testing center. To access information about exam times and places, you will need to create a SPOTO Account. Choose the exams and then CCNA. Then code 200-301. English and Japanese are the available exam languages.

You can now take the exam in a local testing center, at your home, or work. Online exams require you to accept the policies for security.

You can choose from a variety of options when you schedule your exam. You can't pick from a list of test centers that are open during normal business hours. Some centers might offer evening or weekend appointments. When you are taking your exam from a distance location, be sure to pay attention to the time zone and date.

How do I score to pass the CCNA exam?

Cisco states that passing scores cannot be published as exam questions and passing scores can change at any time. However, the passing score is approximately 800-850 points out of 1000. Although the exam takes longer (now 120 minutes), the questions are more frequent.

What is the scoring system for the exam? Cisco uses a point-scale system. It is a scale from 300 to 1000. You start the exam with 300 points. As you answer correctly more questions, your points will increase. You should do your best to answer all questions correctly, even though you don't know how the questions are weighted.

What is the waiting period if I fail the CCNA exam?

According to the policies, you can't retake the same exam within five calendar days. This starts with the day following the failed attempt. Online exam takers will need to wait 48 hours before they can do this. If a candidate fails to pass on Wednesday, the five-day count will begin on Thursday and end on Monday. The candidate can then retake the exam on Tuesday.

A policy is in place to ensure that you do not take the same exam twice if you pass. You will have to pay the certification/exam fee once again.
