CCNA certification renewal requirements
You must renew your CCNA by completing the recertification requirements before the certification expiration date. There are two options to restore your CCNA certification. The first option is the traditional one, where you recertify by taking an exam. The second option is something new and involves earning CE (continuing education) credits.
If you choose the exam option to recertify, you will need to pass one of the following exams.
1. You can pass any of the prospective exams. The most obvious choice is to pass the 200-301 CCNA exam again. However, Cisco also offers two other exams at the Associate level: 200-901 DEVASC for the Cisco Certified Devnet Associate and 200-201 CBROPS for the Cisco Certified CyberOps Associate certification. You can also pass one of these two Cisco online proctored exam to recertify your CCNA and get an additional certificate as well.

2. You can pass any of the Technical Core exams. Cisco offers one Technical Core exam for each of the five directions of the CCNP, including Enterprise, Data Center, Security, Service Provider, and Collaboration. In addition to this, both the Cisco Certified DevNet Professional and Cisco Certified CyberOps Professional certifications have a core exam that can be passed to update your CCNA while gaining additional knowledge and additional certifications. Passing the core exam can lead to expert certification. For example, giving the CCNP Enterprise core exam can lead to a Cisco Certified Professional – Enterprise core certification. You need to pass both the core exam and the concentration exam to earn the specialist certification.

4. You can pass any of the CCIE lab exams. You need to pass a technical core exam to be eligible for the CCIE lab exam. The Technical Core exam will recertify your CCNA anyway. This option is rarely used for CCNA recertification, but if you end up taking the CCIE Lab exam, it will recertify all your previous certifications – including the CCNA.

How long is the CCNA certification valid for?
CCNA certifications are valid for three years from the date of your certification. You must renew your certification by completing recertification requirements before your certification expiration date.
What are the maintenance requirements of the CCNA certification?
Your CCNA certification is valid for three years from the day you pass the exam. You do not need to do anything to maintain the excellent status of your CCNA certification. Cisco is known to make ongoing changes to its certification program; if changes affect the CCNA, your certification will remain valid until your certification expiration date.
If my CCNA certification is terminated, can I regain my membership?
We recommend that you recertify before your certification expires. If your certificate has expired, you must retake the CCNA exam to become CCNA certified. If you plan to recertify by upgrading to the next level of certification or using CE credits, you must recertify before your CCNA certification expires.
Remember, Cisco does not offer extensions on certification deadlines. It is your responsibility to recertify on time. Before scheduling your recertification exam, also be aware of Cisco’s five-day exam retake policy. For example, if you schedule your recertification exam, say, three days before your certification expiration date, and you end up not passing the exam, you will not be able to retake the exam for another five days, which will allow your certification to expire.
What is the best CCNA recertification strategy?
You can recertify and maintain an active CCNA status bypassing the 200-301 CCNA exam again before your certification expires. Even after your CCNA expires, you can pass the 200-301 CCNA exam and get certified again.
The best way to recertify is to pass the Technical Core exam and get an additional Specialist certification at the same time. Suppose you choose this option and take the certification exam after your CCNA expires. In that case, you will lose your CCNA certification, and the Technical Core exam will only earn you the Specialist certification likewise if you plan to recertify by taking a different Associate exam or a Professional concentration exam.
What is the cost to take the CCNA exam for recertification?
The new CCNA certification cost for 200-301 is $300. The actual amount you pay may vary depending on your location and applicable taxes, but $300 is a ballpark figure. The CCNA exam is not cheap! Be well prepared to avoid unnecessary second attempts that will cost you an additional $300.
You can pay and schedule your CCNA exam here. Traditionally, the exam is given at the Pearson VUE Center. At the time of this writing, you have the option of taking the online proctored exam from your home or office to become CCNA certified. View the online exam guide here: How to Take CCNA Exam Online?
In Summary
The CCNA requires a significant investment of your energy, time, and money. Once you earn it, you can have it for three years without having to do anything else. While you can recertify again, bypassing the 200-301 CCNA exam, a better option is to recertify by passing the Advanced Professional Level exam, which will also earn you more skills and, in many cases, additional certifications. With a $300 price tag for the CCNA exam, it helps to be well prepared.
