Why are there requirements for PMPs?

You may be wondering why there are requirements for PMP certification? There are two primary reasons for this. The first main reason is that project management is a severe profession that requires communication with several stakeholders throughout the project. When delivering a scope of work, project managers must be mindful of communication, attitude, and how to manage the expectations of different people. Otherwise, project delivery may fail. Therefore, having solid project management experience is one of the requirements for PMP certification.

The second main reason for having requirements for the PMP is that project management requires solid theoretical knowledge of project management techniques. There are ten knowledge areas that project managers must be proficient in to pass the PMP certification exam. To pass the PMP certification exam, a PMP candidate must score above a certain level in these project management process groups.

For both reasons, the requirements for the PMP exam include the PMP experience requirement and the PMP education requirement. The PMP experience requirement will indicate that the PMP candidate has sufficient soft skills to sit for the PMP exam. The PMP education requirement will suggest that the PMP candidate has enough theoretical background to manage a project.

We will look at the PMP experience requirement and the PMP education requirement in more detail. Please note that depending on which PMP education requirement you meet, your PMP experience requirement will also change. We have categorized these two different options as follows, with option one and option 2
If you meet PMP Education Requirement #1, then you must meet PMP Experience Requirement #2.
If you meet PMP Education Requirement #2, then you must meet PMP Experience Requirement #2.

PMP Education Requirement #1

To apply for PMP certification, you must have at least a secondary degree, e.g., high school or equivalent level of education. If your highest level of education attended is a secondary school degree, to apply for PMP certification, you need to meet the following three PMP certification requirements

1. 5 years of project management experience
2. 7,500 hours leading and directing projects
3. 35 hours of project management education.

Our 35 contact hours of self-paced PMP training satisfies the project management education requirement.

PMP Experience Requirement #1

Please note that the project management experience points in the PMP certification requirements do not seek active management of projects. Participation in a project environment counts toward this 5-year experience requirement. However, 7,500 hours of those five years, or about 3.5 years, need to be spent leading and directing projects. Again, this does not mean that you should sign up for a project as a project manager. A leadership or mentoring role can be a junior team member or supervisor of a team member, a team leader of a group, assisting the project manager with some project management activities, etc.
If your education level is a four-year degree or higher, you should look for the following PMP requirements.

PMP Education Requirement #2

If your highest level of education is a four-year degree or higher, e.g., a bachelor’s degree or equivalent, a master’s degree, a doctorate, etc., to apply for PMP certification, the following three PMP certification requirements shall be followed:
1. 3 years of project management experience
2. 4500 hours of leading and directing projects
3. 35 hours of project management education.

PMP Experience Requirement #2

Please note that the project management experience point in the PMP certification requirements does not seek active management of projects. Participation in a project environment counts toward this 3-year experience requirement. However, 4500 hours of those three years, or about two years, need to be spent leading and directing projects. Again, this does not mean that you should sign up for a project as a project manager. The leadership or mentoring role can be a junior team member or supervisor of a team member, a team leader of a group, assisting the project manager with some project management activities, etc.

What are the benefits of PMP certification?

PMP certification by itself does not prove any competency or experience. However, PMP certification does at least guarantee a certain level of knowledge in project management. However, PMI’s PMP application process and review are very rigorous regarding the relevant experience and education required to become a PMP.
As a result, companies or organizations give PMP certification a very high rating compared to other certificates in the industry. The rigorous process by which PMI checks the requirements for PMP certification is the basis for this high credit given by employers. This is because employers will know that a PMP certification holder has met the rigorous PMP certification requirements and has demonstrated a certain level of project management knowledge and practice.

The PMP certification is not a simple sit-down exam that you can pass. Instead, there are PMP qualification requirements that every PMP certification aspirant must meet. So now, let’s take a look at these PMP certification requirements.

What should I do if I can’t meet the PMP certification requirements?

The PM education requirement aspect of the PMP certification requirements can be easily met by enrolling in 35 contact hours of PMP training. The tricky part of meeting the PMP qualification requirements is project management experience. If you have a bachelor’s degree, at least three years of project experience are needed. If you have a secondary degree, you shall have at least five years of project experience to meet the eligibility of the PMP certification exam.

You may not want to wait to complete your project experience to launch your project management career. In this case, we recommend that you start with the CAPM certification, an entry-level project management certification issued by PMI. The exam content is the same as the PMP certification exam, but the questions are more accessible than the PMP certification exam.

There are also CAPM certification requirements that you must meet, but they are not as stringent as the PMP qualification requirements. If you have a bachelor’s degree or higher, you can sign up for CAPM training and meet the CAPM exam requirements.

CAPM certification is precious and is respected by employers when they are looking for project management positions. If you start your project management career by preparing for the CAPM certification, you will also become familiar with the PMP exam content. Once you have met the project management experience aspect of the PMP certification, you can apply and take the PMP exam to enhance your competency.
