The Cisco CCNA certification has long been the beginning point for Cisco certifications. Those changes would include the significant changes to the CCNA certification and the latest exam, namely CCNA 200-301 exam.

The Old CCNA Family

Cisco would have first introduced the CCNA certification back in 1998. Over the years, Cisco has been releasing a new version of that certification, with new exams, seven more times, most freshly in 2016 with the CCNA 200-125 exam.

Over the years, Cisco would have begun by adding different technologies into its product line, so it would also be creating the CCNA certifications to match, like CCNA Data Center and CCNA Security. There are many differences between CCNA and CCNA security. To remove ambiguity with all these different CCNA certifications, Cisco would rename the age-old original CCNA certification known as CCNA Routing and Switching around the year 2007.

Cisco’s 2019 certification announcements have entirely revamped the entire CCNA lineup. First, Cisco planned to stop offering almost every existing CCNA certification. The plan would be including leaving one consolidated CCNA certification, so with all the others gone, Cisco would be calling this new certification by the old simple name: CCNA with exam code 200-301. The Latest and Only CCNA

Cisco’s announcement messaging about the new CCNA would be describing the plan as a consolidation. The consolidation doesn’t take every exam topic from all existing CCNA certifications into one exam. Instead, Cisco would explain this: CCNA would be consolidating the skills from across all areas, focusing on the fundamental skills when beginning in networking.

CCNA 200-301 Content

As with all Cisco’s exam blueprints, the official Cisco CCNA 200-301 blueprint would be breaking the exam topics into Domains, each with an assigned point of percentage. When you take the exam, the behind-the-scenes process that you would be choosing the questions you are required to observe to select items that would be able to give you these percentage of available points from your exam:
• 20%: Domain 1: Network Fundamentals
• 20%: Domain 2: Network Access
• 25%: Domain 3: IP Connectivity
• 10%: Domain 4: IP Services
• 15%: Domain 5: Security Fundamentals
• 10%: Domain 6: Automation and Programmability

Let’s break down the domains a little more particularly; a couple of critical points could be helpful:

  • Domain 1: Network Fundamentals, would be mentioning some of the essential topics, but it would be including technology from across all five of the other fields.
  • Domain 2: Network Access, including LAN access technologies, about 60% Ethernet, and about 40% Wireless LAN by exam-topic count, which might not indicate the scoring weights.
  • Domain 5: Security Fundamentals, would be including traditional routing and switching security topics, such as device login and change Port Security, with some issues that would be found in CCNA Security in the past.
  • Domain 6: Automation and Programmability, certainly has topics connected to automation and background topics for helping you understand automation and programmability, but no actual programming.

Cisco would be telling us that the new, one-and-only CCNA would be including the content that hiring managers wish their entry-level network engineers for having so that they could be then directed for specializing, possibly into one of the technologies of the five remaining CCNP tracks which would be: Enterprise, Service Provider, Data Center, Security, and Collaboration.
