Cisco and Google launched a turnkey software package this week, which enables customers to closely connect SD-WAN connections with applications running in dedicated data centers, Google Cloud or other clouds, or SaaS applications, thereby deepening the relationship between the two parties.
The jointly developed platform, called the Cisco SD-WAN Cloud Hub with Google Cloud, combines Cisco ’s SD-WAN strategy, telemetry, and security settings with Google ’s software-defined backbone to ensure application service level agreements Security and compliance policies are extended throughout the network.
Sachin Gupta, senior vice president of product management for Cisco’s target-based network group, said: “For customers who want to support multiple cloud deployments while supporting on-premises data centers, this is how they can effectively connect all their sites.” He said: “The integration will be extended to hybrid and multi-cloud environments, such as Google Cloud’s open application platform Anthos, which supports the optimization of distributed multi-cloud microservice-based applications.”
The Cisco SD-WAN Cloud Hub with Google Cloud has many functions. For example, applications usually do not have a way to dynamically send SLA requests to the underlying network, and Gupta detailed the integration in a blog. “With this new integration, applications will be able to dynamically request the required network resources by publishing application data in the Google Cloud Service Directory. The network will be able to use this data to provide resources for appropriate SD-WAN strategies.”
Business-critical applications that require low latency will have this requirement in their Google Cloud Service Directory entries. The appropriate SD-WAN strategy will then be applied to the network. Similarly, because Cisco’s SD-WAN controller vManage can monitor network performance and service health indicators, it can intelligently direct user requests to the best cloud service node.
The platform also has the ability to automatically transfer traffic to links with higher availability or better performance when required by latency-sensitive applications. Gupta said that with the help of Cisco SD-WAN’s network reachability indicators, Google Anthos can make real-time decisions to divert traffic to areas with better network reachability.
With the Cisco SD-WAN Cloud Hub for Google Cloud, customers can expand the single point of orchestration and management of their SD-WAN network to include the foundation provided by the Google Cloud backbone network. Gupta said that with Cisco Cloud Hub, policies can be extended to the cloud to authorize access to cloud applications based on user identity.
