Cisco executives say the growing role of SD-WAN, Wi-Fi 6, multi-domain controls, virtual networks, and network engineers will be important by 2020.

At least according to cisco, popular trends over the coming year include SD-WAN, Wi-Fi 6, multi-domain control, virtual networking, and the evolution of the role of network engineers among network programmers.

Anand Oswal, senior vice president of engineering for Cisco’s Enterprise Network Business Unit, said that they revolve around changes in the overall network shape, that is, expanding data center operations into the cloud and the impact of such changes.

“These fundamental changes in the way business processes operate and access are changing the way we connect locations, our perception of security, the economics of the network, and the demands on the people who take care of them,” Osval said.
In a blog outlined the key trends for 2020, Oswal detailed his thoughts about the two areas.

Wi-Fi 6 and 5G
First of all, wireless technology (especially Wi-Fi 6) will enter the enterprise through the employee’s door and enterprise access point updates. The latest Smartphones from Apple, Samsung, and other manufacturers are all Wi-Fi 6 enabled, and Wi-Fi 6 access points are currently shipping to businesses and consumers.

5G mobile phones have not been widely circulated, although this situation will begin to change in 2020, although it is mainly aimed at consumers and launched at the end of the year. Oswal writes that by 2020, Cisco expects the number of people using Wi-Fi 6 to exceed 5G.

There will also be a major improvement in the way people use Wi-Fi networks in 2020. Oswal said the potential growth of the OpenRoaming project led by Cisco will make it easier to join participating Wi-Fi networks. OpenRoaming uses the underlying technology behind HotSpot 2.0 / IEEE 802.11u, which is expected to enable users to seamlessly switch between wireless networks and LTE without interference-simulating mobile network connections. Current project partners include Samsung, Boingo, and GlobalReach Technologies.

2020 will also see the adoption of new frequency bands, including the start of deployment of the ultra-millimeter wave but short-range 5G “millimeter wave” (24Ghz to 100Ghz) spectrum and citizen broadband radio service (CBRS). About 3.5Ghz. This may lead to new private networks using LTE and 5G technologies, especially for IoT applications.
Oswal wrote: “We will also see continued progress in opening the 6GHz band in the United States and other parts of the world to enable unlicensed Wi-Fi use.”

For 5G services, some will be launched in 2020, but “almost none will be the ultra-high-speed connections we have promised or will see in the next few years,” Osval said. “Since 5G was initially unsatisfactory, we will see a lot of high-speed wireless traffic transferred to Wi-Fi networks.”
In the long run, “combining the performance improvement of Wi-Fi 6 and (ultimately) 5G, we will make a long-term, long-term innovation on the access network,” Oswal wrote.
