These are my top 5 networking trends for 2020.
1. Networking Will Become More Automated
Over the past few years, network providers have released automated platforms to simplify network management. But until now, they still feel like flowers are not in full bloom. If this is the end of traditional network engineers, then the network community believes that there are interoperability problems, functional parity problems, and even cultural problems.
In 2020, I think we have finally reached a critical moment, automation will become the main way to control the development of the network. while local automation remains popular in Reddit threads and Blogosphere, beware of vendors integrating automation into their platforms-not just as another function, but also as benchmarks for how to operate the network.
I believe we will see more one-click network deployments for WAN, parks and data centers, similar to what we see in public cloud providers. I don’t think that means the end of traditional network engineers. but it does mean we will see more collaboration between the network and the application team.
In the coming year, the topic of whether traditional network engineers will lose their jobs will also change. We discussed in 2019 whether engineers need to give up learning OSPF and switch to Python. Taking time to refine the new paradigm, I think we finally come to a conclusion.
2. 5G and Wi-Fi 6 Will Make Their Way into Our Homes and Offices
There will be five G to compete with Wi-Fi 6 families and businesses next year. Now, I know this is not the trend everyone says, but it is still an important thing to pay attention to in the coming year.
cellular providers will have the opportunity to deliver on their commitment to introduce 5 G into our homes and offices through the G personal 5 cellular networks. I realized that it was promised a long time ago, and it took ISP years to finally merge around a universal 5 G communication language. We will see ISP gather five G NR later in 2020 and drive the transition from large-scale connectivity to small-scale connectivity in offices and households.
By further reducing wireless network performance, this can help solve the challenge of connecting so many wireless devices at a time (the Internet of things makes this problem worse). Wi-Fi 6, however, is expected to solve the same problem as the 5 G and have easier access to the market, which is why I am not sure that the 5 G of large ISP will win the competition for small wireless networks. attention ISP how to break into this new market area by 2020.
Why Wi-Fi 6? In the second half of 2019, 802.11ax (better known as Wi-Fi 6) boomed. Networking vendors rushed to release new access points, wireless controllers and marketing initiatives. Now, Wi-Fi 6 infrastructure is ready to go, but devices, such as phones, laptops, and other Wi-Fi-capable device chipsets, weren’t there until very recently.
As a result, I expect that in 2020, as computer and mobile phone manufacturers move towards new standards, devices that support Wi-Fi 6 will become widely available. This is a good thing. Because Wi-Fi 6 can solve practical problems both at home and in the office, people are happy to use it anywhere.
3. AI and ML Will Lead to Autonomous Networks
Using machine learning (ML) algorithms and artificial intelligence (AI) to analyze data will become a common starting point for many technologies. ML can be predicted based on network data. In a broad sense, AI can act wisely on these predictions.
ML and AI-based analytical tools will become increasingly powerful by 2020. They will become built-in web platforms rather than an unlogged-in management platform.
This does not mean that routers and switches will do network analysis for us. Remember, we also see a trend towards a fully automated network managed by some kind of controller. I believe that advanced analysis will be directly applied to these automated platforms, which will evolve into the validation mechanism and the beginning of the self-operating network.
I don’t think we’ ll see a fully autonomous network by 2020. but I do believe that advanced analytics and automation (the main component of intention-based networks) will become so common that we will discuss the real next step in self-repair software-defined networks.
4. The Advent of CloudOps Teams
On this point, I think no one in the IT has heard of AWS, Microsoft Azure or Google Cloud Platform. The public cloud has proven to be a reliable, scalable and cost-effective alternative to local resources.
In 2019, we also saw some of these resources return to the local data center. The industry decided to adopt a hybrid cloud model, that is, to integrate resources locally and in the cloud. But the design is not without obstacles.
The hybrid design is difficult to support with traditional network technology. They are clumsy, lack of simple functionality, and are often very limited. However, advances SD-WAN, containerization and increasing virtualization of network functions make hybrid models easier to deploy and manage.
For example, with just a few clicks, companies can now easily deploy resources in local data centers and favorite public clouds through seamless high-quality connections. Today’s companies can not wait for independent teams to piece together cumbersome manual configuration tapestries.
