This guide covers WatchGuard’s Network Security Essentials for Locally-Managed Fireboxes exam, taken through Kryterion. It was checked against WatchGuard’s and Kryterion’s published pages in October 2026. Anything that could not be tied to an official page is marked, so you know what to confirm before exam day.

How This Exam Is Delivered
WatchGuard does not run its own testing. Its exams are delivered by Kryterion, either at an authorized Kryterion test center or through Kryterion’s online proctoring service. WatchGuard states that both options cost the same. You register through WatchGuard’s exam registration site, and every candidate needs their own account, because the exam must be booked and paid for from the account of the person taking it. Kryterion’s own help pages call the candidate portal Webassessor and use Respondus LockDown Browser as the secure browser for online exams.
WatchGuard says test centers are available worldwide and that online proctoring is open to anyone who prefers to test from home or the office. It does not publish a country-by-country list for online delivery (confirm on the official page). Kryterion also maintains a sanctioned-countries policy, so if you live somewhere with export or sanctions restrictions, check it before you pay.
One scheduling detail catches people out: appointments are set in the time zone tied to the address on your exam account, and slots appear around the clock. Check the AM/PM label before you confirm a slot.

Pre-Exam Preparation
Hardware and Network Requirements
These come from Kryterion’s online testing requirements page, last updated in October 2026.
- Windows 10 or Windows 11, or macOS 12 (Monterey) or newer.
- The latest version of Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox.
- At least 50 MB of free disk space and a screen resolution of 1024 x 768 or higher.
- A webcam and microphone. An external webcam must connect by USB.
- An English (QWERTY) keyboard.
- Internet at 1.0 Mbps or faster for both download and upload, ping under 200 ms and jitter under 50 ms. Download speed should be equal to or higher than upload speed.
- No virtual machines. Kryterion prohibits VMware, VirtualBox, Boot Camp and any other virtual environment.
- A personal computer, not a work machine. Kryterion strongly recommends this because installing the secure browser can need administrator rights that managed networks often block.
- Chromebooks only work for programs that explicitly allow them (confirm on the official page).
Kryterion does not mention VPNs on the requirements. Turn yours off anyway, since a VPN adds latency and another thing that can drop. For other software, Kryterion says you may need to temporarily disable pop-up blockers, antivirus, firewalls, VMware or Boot Camp, Skype, Photo Booth and TeamViewer before launching the secure browser. Its AI check-in guidance also says to turn off screen-sharing and remote-access tools.
On cameras, WatchGuard says you can use either a laptop’s built-in webcam or an external one. Kryterion lets each exam sponsor require an external or dual camera, so read your confirmation email in case WatchGuard has set anything stricter (confirm on the official page).
ID Requirements
Name matching is where most check-in problems start. Kryterion’s guidance is that your ID must be an original, unexpired, readable, government-issued document, and that the name on it must match the name on your registration exactly. In a pre-check, the person or AI reviewing you compares the first and last name on your ID with the details on your account, along with your photo.
- Kryterion lists passports, driver’s licenses, national or state ID cards, military IDs and digital IDs as acceptable.
- If your name recently changed, bring the official document that shows the change, such as a marriage certificate or court order.
- Scans and photos of an ID do not count.
There is a difference between the two sets of rules. WatchGuard’s own FAQ says you must bring two forms of ID in the registered name, both carrying your signature, with a photo on at least one. It words this in the same paragraph as its test center rules, while Kryterion’s online guidance only asks for one government-issued photo ID. Where the vendor and the platform differ, follow the vendor, so carry a second signed ID to be safe (confirm on the official page).
WatchGuard does not publish region-specific ID guidance for global candidates, and its examples are a current driver’s license, a current passport or an equivalent. For a global audience, a passport is the safest first choice, because it is accepted everywhere and has a signature line. Many national ID cards have no signature, which could matter if WatchGuard’s signature requirement applies online.
Exam Tip: Open your exam account tonight and compare the name on it, letter by letter, with your ID. Middle names, accents and hyphens are where mismatches hide. Fix the account before exam day, because you cannot fix it during check-in.
Testing Environment
- Use a quiet, well-lit room, and tell everyone in the house that no one can walk in. No other person may be in the testing area.
- Clear the desk down to one computer, one monitor, one keyboard and one mouse. Kryterion’s secure browser detects a second monitor and disables it, but unplug it the night before anyway.
- Remove headphones and earbuds, watches, jewelry, hats, lanyards and badges. Kryterion’s launch guide tells you to take these off before the exam begins.
- Keep phones, smart glasses and smartwatches out of reach. A phone is used for check-in only, and you put it away afterward.
- Clear away notebooks, printed material, sticky notes, bags, pens and paper. WatchGuard allows no reference material at all.
- Skip food. WatchGuard says you cannot eat during the exam. For drinks, Kryterion’s rules vary by exam sponsor, so ask before bringing even water (confirm on the official page).
Step-by-Step Check-in Walkthrough
The sequence below follows Kryterion’s launch guide and its AI check-in description. Whether your session includes the phone check-in and room scan depends on how WatchGuard has configured the exam, and the exact order can vary (confirm on the official page).
- Install the secure browser and set up your biometric profile at least a day before. WatchGuard recommends leaving at least 24 hours between booking and the exam so you can meet every requirement. Sticking point: the install button may stay disabled until you have registered for an exam. Fix: book first, then install. If a work laptop blocks the install, switch to a personal machine.
- Run Kryterion’s system check on the same computer, in the same room, on the same network you will use. Sticking point: the check passes at the office but your home Wi-Fi is weak. Fix: test where you will actually sit, or plug in an Ethernet cable.
- Log in to your exam account at your appointment time, open My Assessments and press Launch. Sticking point: opening the secure browser directly does nothing, because the session must start from your account. Fix: always launch from the account.
- Let the secure browser start and accept the terms of service. Sticking point: an update prompt appears and the exam will not start until you finish it. Fix: close the browser, go to My Assessments, choose Install Secure Browser, select Reinstall, then launch again.
- Pass the camera, microphone and connection check. Sticking point: the preview shows your face but not your hands and keyboard. Fix: move the camera back or tilt it until your head, torso, keyboard and mouse are all in frame.
- Complete biometric authentication if WatchGuard requires it. Kryterion’s methods are a facial photo compared with your enrollment photo, or a typing-pattern check. Sticking point: bad lighting causes a mismatch. Fix: face a light source and remove glasses glare.
- Start the phone check-in if the splash page asks for it. Scan the QR code, or open the shown URL and type in the code. Take a selfie and a photo of your ID, then put the phone away and return to your computer. Sticking point: glare makes the ID unreadable. Fix: lay the ID flat in even light and retake until every line is sharp.
- Do the room scan. You will be asked to show your whole desk, under and around it, the walls, floor and corners, plus any extra monitors. Sticking point: a short webcam cable or a laptop that cannot swing around. Fix: use an external USB webcam with a long cord, or lift the laptop slowly to show each area.
- Wait for approval and the exam to begin. After a successful pre-check, an Advocate or the AI system releases the exam. Sticking point: nothing seems to happen for a while. Fix: stay at your desk with your face in view and use the on-screen chat or the Support button rather than leaving.
Exam Tip: WatchGuard says the Launch button shows 10 minutes before your start time and stays up for 20 minutes total, which closes it 10 minutes after the start. Kryterion’s own standards describe 20 minutes after the start. The vendor’s rule wins, so plan to click Launch about five minutes early and treat 10 minutes late as your absolute limit. Missing the appointment forfeits your fee.
What the Proctor Looks for During the Room Scan
The reviewer’s job is to confirm nothing can feed you answers. Kryterion’s AI check-in and standards pages point to these items:
- Your entire desk surface, with the keyboard and mouse clearly visible.
- The space under and around the desk, including the floor.
- Walls and corners, where notes or sticky notes could be.
- Any additional monitor, which must be unplugged or turned away.
- Phones, tablets, smartwatches, smart glasses and other devices.
- Paper, books, writing tools and printed material.
- People or movement in the background.
- Your face, which must be clearly visible with adequate light, and your eyewear, which proctors inspect for recording technology.
When items turn up during a pre-check, Kryterion’s guidance is to move them at least a foot away from the front, right or left of your computer. Cluttered areas are looked at but not necessarily cleared. Do not rely on that. Clear the surface yourself. The scan also does not end once the exam starts, since proctors keep watching your video feed and a recording is kept of every session.
Rules During the Exam
Kryterion lets each exam sponsor decide which alerts lead to a suspension and how many alerts are allowed first. WatchGuard has not published its settings, so the two tiers below are my grouping of Kryterion’s published alert and misconduct lists (confirm on the official page).
Tier 1: Warnings
These trigger an on-screen alert asking you to fix the problem. Repeating them, or ignoring the alert, can escalate to a suspension depending on sponsor settings.
- Leaning out of the camera’s view.
- Reading questions aloud, talking about the exam or speaking to someone.
- Unapproved items in view, including hats, headphones, jewelry, watches, phones and tablets.
- Camera out of position, out of focus or the room too dark or too bright.
- Prolonged staring or looking away from the screen, which Kryterion treats as a sign you might be using something out of view.
- Leaving the testing area, which Kryterion says can end the session early.
Tier 2: Suspension, Termination or Misconduct Review
These are treated as serious misconduct. Kryterion also says failure to follow proctor instructions can lead to suspension and loss of your exam fee.
- Photographing, recording or writing down exam questions.
- Seat swapping or any other form of someone else testing for you.
- Logging in with another person’s credentials or profile.
- Using unauthorized notes, books, devices or other aids.
- Receiving help of any kind from another person.
- Tampering with the computer or using it for anything but the exam.
- Threatening or lewd conduct.
Rules on Breaks, Scratch Paper and Drinks
Breaks: Kryterion does not allow breaks unless the exam sponsor authorizes them, and leaving the area can end your session. WatchGuard’s published FAQ does not mention breaks (confirm on the official page). Plan for two uninterrupted hours and use the restroom beforehand.
Scratch paper and pens: WatchGuard’s FAQ lists notepads and pens as not allowed in the test area, and Kryterion discourages physical scratch paper for online exams.
Drinks and food: WatchGuard says you cannot eat during the exam. Drink rules are set by the sponsor, so ask before you bring anything (confirm on the official page).
Support and interruptions: The Support button in the top right corner pauses both the exam content and the timer while a live agent helps you. If an interruption is outside your control, such as a power cut or outage, the proctor pauses the session until it is fixed. If it cannot be fixed, the session ends and any reschedule help depends on the sponsor’s rules.
Online Proctored vs. Test Center
| Factor | Online proctored | Kryterion test center |
|---|---|---|
| Price | Same as test center | Same as online |
| Equipment | Your own computer, webcam and secure browser | Provided by the center |
| ID | Government photo ID, name matching your account; WatchGuard’s FAQ asks for two signed IDs | Two IDs in the registered name, both signed, one with a photo |
| Check-in | Launch button, phone check-in, room scan | Staff check you in, ask you to turn out pockets and show watches or jewelry |
| Desk rules | Cleared desk, no second monitor | No food, laptops, backpacks, notepads or pens in the test area |
| Free cancellation or reschedule | More than 24 hours ahead; US $55 fee inside 24 hours | More than 72 hours ahead; US $85 fee inside 72 hours |
| Main risk | Your internet, power and room | Travel and slot availability |
Who Each Option Suits
Online suits you if you have a quiet private room, a personal computer you control, a stable connection and a clean desk, and you can get a webcam that sees your whole workspace. Pick a test center if you only have a work laptop, share your space, have unreliable internet or just want technical problems to be someone else’s job. Check-in time at a test center is not published by WatchGuard, so ask Kryterion when you book (confirm on the official page).
Exam Tip: If your only computer belongs to your employer, go to a test center. Secure browser installs can need admin rights you do not have, and corporate security tools can block the launch. Finding that out at launch time costs you the appointment.

FAQ
Questions Candidates Ask Most
What happens if my internet drops during the exam?
The proctor pauses the session for interruptions outside your control and lets you continue once the issue is fixed. If it cannot be resolved, the session is discontinued and you may get help rescheduling, depending on WatchGuard’s rules as the exam sponsor. Contact Kryterion support right away, so there is a record near the time of the incident.
Can I use my laptop’s built-in webcam?
Yes. WatchGuard’s FAQ says you can use either an internal laptop webcam or an external one. Your face must stay fully in view the whole time. An external USB webcam on a long cable makes the room scan far easier.
What if the Launch button disappears or check-in times out?
Contact Kryterion support through live chat or the web form straight away and keep the transcript. Kryterion’s candidate guidance says that if your exam times out while you are waiting for support, it should reschedule you at no charge, but that comes from a program page other than WatchGuard’s, so ask about your own case (confirm on the official page). Do not simply wait. WatchGuard says a missed appointment forfeits your payment and is not refundable.
What if my ID name does not match my exam account?
Fix it before the exam. Kryterion’s help center has an article on changing your legal name in your account, and a recent name change needs supporting documents. Do not try your luck at check-in.
Can I use my work laptop or company network?
Kryterion strongly recommends against it. Administrator rights, firewalls and security software on managed devices commonly block the secure browser. If you have no other machine, book a test center.
Can I use two monitors?
No. Kryterion’s standards allow one computer, one monitor, one keyboard and one mouse. The secure browser detects a second monitor and disables it, but unplug it anyway so the room scan is clean.
What do I do if my exam gets suspended?
Open a ticket with Kryterion support and keep your Webassessor login ID and exam details ready. Kryterion records every session with video and audio and attaches a transcript of all alerts and notes, which helps when support reviews your case.
