This guide is for candidates sitting the RUCKUS Certified Network Implementer exam online for the first time. It pulls together what RUCKUS says about its remote-proctored exams and what ProctorU, the proctoring company, says about its own check-in process. Where the two differ, RUCKUS wins, and I point out the difference.

How This Exam Is Delivered

RUCKUS says its certification exams are delivered through Exam Studio, the store and candidate portal where you buy, schedule, and launch the exam. Live proctoring comes from ProctorU, and candidates connect through ProctorU’s Guardian Proctoring Browser. RUCKUS describes this exam as remote proctored, and its certification page says high-stakes exams are remote proctored so you can take them from anywhere.

Exam Tip: Question counts differ between old and new study guides, and many third-party sites still quote 59 or 60. Download the current guide from RUCKUS the week of your exam and trust that number, not a practice-test site.

Pre-Exam Preparation

RUCKUS tells you to test your setup before you schedule, not after. Do the equipment test on the same computer, in the same room, at the same time of day as your appointment.

Hardware and Network Requirements

RUCKUS does not publish its own spec sheet. It points you to the ProctorU equipment test, so these are ProctorU’s current minimums.

  • A Windows 10 or later PC, or a Mac running macOS 11.0 or later. Tablets and phones are not supported.
  • Chromebooks: ProctorU supports ChromeOS only through a browser-extension workflow, while RUCKUS names the Guardian Proctoring Browser. Treat a Chromebook as unsupported. (confirm on the official page)
  • The Guardian Browser installed ahead of time. On a Mac, give it camera, microphone, and screen-recording permission before exam day.
  • 3 Mbps upload and download as the minimum. Mobile hotspots and tethering are discouraged, and a wired connection is recommended.
  • A webcam of at least 640×480 (the built-in one counts), a working microphone, and speakers. Microphones built into headphones do not count.
  • 8 GB of RAM, a 4-core CPU at 2.4 GHz, a 1366×768 screen, and ports UDP/TCP 80 and 443 open.
  • One monitor only. If you use an external display with a closed laptop, mirror it and plug it straight into the laptop, not through a dock.
  • No virtual machine, no Apple Boot Camp, no remote-control software such as TeamViewer or AnyDesk, and no unlicensed or test-build Windows.
  • Headphones, earbuds, and headsets are not allowed.
  • Corporate laptops and VPNs: RUCKUS asks you to use a personal computer if possible and to disconnect from any VPN. It does not ban work networks outright, but a company laptop with locked-down security software is the most common reason an install or screen share fails.

ID Requirements

RUCKUS requires a government-issued photo ID, such as a driver’s license or passport, showing your photo and your name as it appears in Exam Studio. The name field in the RUCKUS Certification Store is where mismatches start, so type your full legal name exactly as printed on the ID you will hold up.

RUCKUS does not require a secondary ID, but ProctorU says a proctor may ask to see an additional form of ID. Keep a second form of ID within reach in case you are asked. The proctor can also ask you to retake the ID photo or show the ID again live.

For global candidates, I found no country-specific ID rule from RUCKUS. A passport is the safest choice because RUCKUS names it as an example and it prints your name in a standard format. A national ID card or driver’s license should also work if it has your photo and name. (confirm on the official page) RUCKUS’s privacy notice adds that your ID image and face photo are stored by ProctorU for 90 days.

The RUCKUS document also says that if the personal details you entered at purchase do not exactly match your ID, you can still sit the exam. (confirm on the official page) Do not plan around that. The proctor still compares your face, your ID photo, and your name.

Exam Tip: If your ID shows your name in a different order, with a middle name, or with accents your keyboard cannot type, fix the Exam Studio profile or email ruckuscerts@RUCKUSNetworks.com (confirm on the official page) before exam day. Sorting out a name problem live, with the proctor waiting, is a bad start.

Testing Environment Requirements

  • Sit at a desk or table with your computer on a hard surface. Do not test from a bed, sofa, car, or the floor.
  • Be alone, with the door closed. If you can, sit with your back to the door.
  • Avoid rooms with large glass windows or glass walls, such as a glassed-in conference room.
  • Clear the desk and the area around it of notes, books, calculators, phones, and any other materials.
  • Put your phone behind you and out of arm’s reach.
  • Use a well-lit room. Light from behind you or from a window behind your screen makes ID and face photos fail.
  • Remove non-religious head coverings, and take off wristwatches.

Step-by-Step Check-in Walkthrough

Some details below come from RUCKUS’s “What to Expect” document, which was written for an older ProctorU workflow built around a chat application, and some come from ProctorU’s current Guardian process. The 2026 RUCKUS study guide still links that document, but the screens you see may differ. (confirm on the official page)

  1. Buy and schedule the exam in the RUCKUS Certification Store, at least 72 hours ahead. Enter your name as on your ID. The common sticking point is the wrong time zone or AM/PM. After booking, check that your Exam Studio dashboard shows a countdown to the time you expect.
  2. Install the Guardian Browser and run the ProctorU equipment test. The usual snags are Mac permissions, a firewall blocking the install, and a RAM-hungry laptop. Reboot, close everything else, and rerun the test until it passes from your exam room.
  3. At your scheduled time, log into the Exam Studio Candidate Portal and click Start Exam. RUCKUS does not publish an early check-in window or a late-arrival grace period. (confirm on the official page) ProctorU’s own guidance, as copied on a university help site, says to log in two to three minutes early and that the start button disappears about 15 minutes after the scheduled time. (confirm on the official page) Do not push either limit. Be at your desk 30 minutes early and click the moment the link appears.
  4. Work through the Guardian pre-check screens: quick tips, welcome screen, camera and microphone selection, the allowed-resources list, and accommodations. If the wrong camera is selected, pick the right one in the device screen. You can change devices later with the Live button in the browser toolbar.
  5. Take your face photo and ID photo. Glare on the ID and a cropped edge are the usual failures. Hold the ID flat, fill the frame, and face the light. Use the Retake button until all four corners and the photo are readable.
  6. Take the self-guided room scan photos if your exam is configured for it. Follow the on-screen prompts, and use Back to redo any photo. If you are not prompted, the live proctor does the scan instead.
  7. Wait in the exam lobby for a live proctor. A chat box appears once the proctor connects. Do not close it. RUCKUS warns that closing the proctor chat application can drop you into a general queue with waits of up to an hour or more. RUCKUS also asks you not to start a support session from the ProctorU Support tab, and not to restart your PC unless told to, because a restart can end the Exam Studio session. The proctor will troubleshoot for at least five minutes before handing you to support. (confirm on the official page)
  8. Complete the proctor’s security checks: ID check, a full camera survey of the room, a mirror or phone-in-selfie-mode check of your screen, and a check of wrists and ears. The proctor may ask to take control of your mouse to close apps, disable a second display, turn off screenshots and hotkeys, silence notifications, and disconnect a VPN. Say yes, and let it finish.
  9. Wait for the proctor to enter the passcode in Exam Studio. You then get up to 30 minutes to read the welcome message, do the tutorial, and sign the Candidate Agreement. Read the agreement. It defines what counts as prohibited behavior, and your two-hour clock only starts when the first question is displayed.
  10. Finish the exam, then contact your proctor. RUCKUS says the proctor re-enters the passcode to conclude the session. Close the browser and any chat window afterward to disconnect fully.

Exam Tip: The most expensive mistake in check-in is closing a window you think you are done with. Leave the proctor chat open until the proctor tells you the session is over.

What the Proctor Looks For During the Room Scan

The proctor is checking that nothing in your room can help you and that nobody else is in it. Expect a slow pan of the camera, and expect to be asked to repeat parts of it.

  • All four walls, floor to ceiling, including corners.
  • The desk, keyboard, and monitor, and the floor underneath the desk.
  • Your screen, shown through a mirror or a phone in selfie mode, so the proctor can see what you see.
  • Notes, books, calculators, phones, sticky notes, and loose paper within reach.
  • Your wrists, with watches off, and both ears, clear of earbuds.
  • Your glasses, which must be normal eyewear and not smart or digital glasses.
  • The door, closed, and any glass wall or large window.
  • Your monitors: a second display must be disconnected, and the proctor may have you cover it with cloth.

Rules During the Exam

RUCKUS uses a two-strike system. Every session is recorded and later reviewed by RUCKUS administrators against the Candidate Agreement.

Tier 1: Warning

RUCKUS says that if the proctor sees prohibited behavior, you get a warning. ProctorU lists the behaviors it flags during any exam:

  • Talking or whispering aloud. RUCKUS adds that you must not read questions aloud.
  • Leaving the camera view. Your face, chin to forehead, must stay in frame.
  • Looking off-screen when no materials are allowed.
  • Someone entering your room or talking to you.
  • Using materials that are not allowed.

Tier 2: Termination and Invalidation

RUCKUS says a second observed instance of the prohibited behavior results in the proctor terminating the exam. It also says credentials will not be issued if you are out of compliance, and reviewers can judge that after the exam. That means you can finish all 50 questions and still have the result withheld.

RUCKUS does not publish a list of behaviors that end an exam on the first offense. ProctorU also flags screenshots or photos of the exam, copying and pasting exam content, running a virtual machine, and using a second monitor. Do not test whether any of them is a one-strike offense. (confirm on the official page)

Rules on Breaks, Scratch Paper, and Drinks

RUCKUS’s document does not mention breaks, and it says nothing about scratch paper or a whiteboard. (confirm on the official page) Its only desk rule is to clear notes and materials. Assume no breaks, no paper, and no pen unless the Candidate Agreement or your proctor says otherwise.

  • Breaks: Plan to sit for the full two hours. ProctorU says that if a break is ever allowed, you tell the proctor before leaving, and leaving camera view may trigger a new room scan.
  • Drinks: RUCKUS allows drinks but not food. This differs from ProctorU’s general guidance, which has many testing organizations clear drinks off the desk. Follow RUCKUS, but use a clear bottle with a cap and keep it out of the way.
  • Sections: The exam is split into sections. You can review all questions in a section before moving on, but once you submit a section you cannot return to it.
  • Talking: Do not read questions aloud, even quietly.

Exam Tip: Treat each section submission as final. Flag the questions you are unsure about, finish the whole section, use your review time, and only then submit.

Online Proctored vs. Test Center

For this exam, the comparison is mostly theoretical: RUCKUS documents only the online option. The test-center column reflects how test centers generally work across the industry, as with Pearson VUE or PSI exams, and is not a RUCKUS policy.

FactorOnline proctored (RUCKUS option)Test center (not found for RCNI)
Availability for this examYes, through Exam Studio and ProctorUNo official option found (confirm on the official page)
Who supplies the computerYou doTypically the center does
Room controlYou prepare and prove itThe center prepares it
Main riskTechnical failures, a long proctor wait, a room that fails the scanTravel and fixed locations
SchedulingAt least 72 hours ahead, from homeDepends on center availability

Online suits you if you have a quiet private room, a personal Windows or Mac computer, and a stable home connection. A test center would suit someone with shared housing, a locked-down work-only laptop, or an unreliable connection. Since RUCKUS offers only the online route, the practical fix for those problems is to borrow a private room and a personal laptop for exam day.

Exam Day Checklist

The Night Before

  • Unplug your second monitor and put it somewhere the proctor will not see it.
  • Run the ProctorU equipment test again on your exam computer.
  • Confirm the exam time, time zone, and AM/PM in your Exam Studio dashboard.
  • Install pending OS updates now, not tomorrow morning.
  • Find your ID, check the expiry date, and confirm the name matches your Exam Studio profile.
  • Clear your desk and take down anything on the walls that looks like a cheat sheet.

60 Minutes Before

  • Restart your computer and close every program that is not required.
  • Disconnect any VPN and quit remote-control, messaging, and screen-recording apps.
  • Plug in power and switch to a wired connection if you can.
  • Tell the household that you cannot be interrupted for at least two hours.
  • Set up the mirror or have your phone ready for the screen check.
  • Take off your watch and remove any head covering that is not religious.

30 Minutes Before

  • Sit at your desk, with the door closed, and your phone behind you.
  • Log into the Exam Studio Candidate Portal and look for the countdown.
  • Have your ID within reach, and a second ID ready if you have one.

  • Open the Guardian Browser and check the camera and microphone previews.

During the Exam

  • Keep your face in the frame and your eyes on the screen.
  • Do not speak, whisper, or read questions aloud.

FAQ

Connection and Check-in Questions

What happens if my internet drops during the exam?

RUCKUS does not publish a reconnection policy. (confirm on the official page) Reconnect right away, reopen the Guardian Browser, and message your proctor if the chat is still available. If you cannot get back in, email the RUCKUS certifications team with the exact time and a screenshot of any error as soon as you are able to.

Can I use my laptop’s built-in webcam?

Yes. ProctorU accepts a built-in or external webcam of at least 640×480 resolution. Make sure it can show your face in good light, and use a mirror or a phone in selfie mode to show your screen to the proctor, as RUCKUS requires.

What if check-in times out or I miss my start time?

RUCKUS does not state its late policy. (confirm on the official page) A copy of ProctorU’s own guidance says that the start button disappears about 15 minutes after the scheduled time and you must book a new slot. (confirm on the official page) Whether a missed slot costs you the $150 fee is not stated, so contact the certifications team immediately.

What if the proctor does not show up?

Wait in the lobby and keep the chat window open. RUCKUS says it can take several minutes for a proctor to begin chatting, and that closing the chat can push you into a queue with waits of an hour or more. (confirm on the official page)

Equipment and Rules Questions

Can I use my work laptop?

RUCKUS prefers a personal computer and asks you to disconnect from your VPN. A company laptop can work, but you need permission to install the Guardian Browser and grant screen-recording access. Test it long before exam day.

Can I wear glasses, a watch, or headphones?

Regular glasses are fine, but the proctor will check that they are not smart glasses. Take off wristwatches and show both wrists. Earbuds, headphones, and headsets are not allowed, and you will be asked to show that both ears are clear.

What if my ID name does not match my Exam Studio name?

Fix it before exam day. RUCKUS says a mismatch with the details you entered at purchase will not stop you sitting the exam, but the proctor still checks your ID against your face, so a mismatch can still cause delays. (confirm on the official page)
