The Project Management Institute (PMI) announced PMP change in 2019 and planned to make the new exam effective in July 2020. Given the continuing pandemic of COVID-19, PMI has postponed the exam change to January 2, 2021, so that PMP® aspirants can have extra time to access training resources and prepare for exams.
In this article, you will learn more about the PMP® exam change, how this change affects candidates, and the next steps to take. If you are currently studying for the PMP® exam, we will explore what this means.

When does the PMP exam change in 2021?
The new PMP® exam will take effect on January 2, 2021. This means PMP certification exam takers will sit for the new PMP exam content outline as of the 2nd of Jan 2021. So, the PMP exam has changed already. Knowing and understanding the upcoming PMP exam changes is imperative to best prepare for the PMP exam.
What are the changes to the PMP exam in 2021?
1. Exam scope
The current PMP exam is based on five performance areas, but starting from January 2, 2021, the exam will be based on three areas: people, process, and business environment. In each of these three areas, the exam content overview (ECO) lists the tasks (what our project manager does) and the Enablers (the actions we take to complete the task).
Please note that changes to the new PMP exam do not mean that the PMBOK will change as well. The latest PMBOK (6th edition) was released in late 2017 and the PMP exam was changed in the first quarter of 2018 based on the PMBOK.
|DOMAIN||CURRENT ECO 2015||NEW ECO 2019|
|Domain I||Initiating 13%||People 42%|
|Domain II||Planning 24%||Process 50%|
|Domain III||Executing 31%||Business Environment 8%|
|Domain IV||Monitoring & Controlling 25%|
|Domain V||Closing 7%|
2. Methods: Predictive, Agile, and Hybrid
PMI also clarifies that about half of the exams will represent predictive project management methods, and the other half will define agile or hybrid methods.
You may have heard of these changes. Their importance makes them on this list. The latest changes to the application process and exam availability are as follows:
i) The application process is now more accessible and much less time-consuming.
ii) Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, PMI decided to allow online, hosted PMP exams so that candidates can easily take the exam at home.

Schedule exams early
Once you decide to take the PMP exam, it is wise to keep in mind the target exam date and plan things later. We recommend you schedule your PMP exam optimally so that you have enough room in case of a retake. Make sure that you get enough time to prepare the new PMP exam thoroughly. Remember, there may be thousands of PMP aspiring people trying to get a spot before the exam changes. Don’t be the one who starts the application process. Schedule your PMP exam as soon as possible to avoid the failure of the appointment!
You must have read about domain changes earlier in this article. According to the general view, it seems that the new PMP exam will be more difficult. Coupled with the focus on agile and Hybrid, you will find that things are not very simple. Scenario-based questioning in the PMP exam is also known for failing experienced project managers. Nevertheless, taking the new PMP exam is more like sailing in an unknown sea.
