Many older blog posts still describe OnVUE check-in, because the certificate ran on Pearson VUE when CFA Society UK administered it. Ignore those. Today you have two options, both run by Prometric:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><strong>Online Proctored Testing (OPT)<\/strong>&nbsp;through Prometric&#8217;s ProProctor application, with a live check-in agent and a live proctor watching you for the whole session.<\/li><li><strong>In-person Site Testing (IST)<\/strong>&nbsp;at a Prometric test center in selected markets.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Neither option is available everywhere. CFA Institute states that ProProctor remote proctoring is not offered in all markets, and the certificate itself is not yet sold in every country. Check availability for your country before you pay. Where they differ, CFA Institute&#8217;s policy is the one that governs your exam, but meeting the stricter Prometric numbers costs you nothing and removes risk. So aim for the stricter figure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><strong>Device:<\/strong>&nbsp;a laptop or desktop. iPads, Android tablets and phones are not supported. A Microsoft Surface works only in laptop mode.<\/li><li><strong>Operating system:<\/strong>&nbsp;Windows 8.1 or later. For Mac, CFA Institute lists macOS 10.13 or later except 13.0\u201313.2.1 and 15.0; Prometric&#8217;s guide only supports macOS 12 (Monterey) and later, still excluding 13.0\u201313.2.1. Use macOS 12 or newer to be safe. ChromeOS and Linux are not supported.<\/li><li><strong>Virtual machines:<\/strong>&nbsp;not allowed. Run the exam on the physical machine.<\/li><li><strong>VPN, firewall, antivirus:<\/strong>&nbsp;turn off your VPN and disable or add exceptions for firewalls and antivirus. Prometric says these can stop ProProctor launching.<\/li><li><strong>Admin mode:<\/strong>&nbsp;you need administrator rights to install ProProctor, but Prometric says the app is not compatible with a machine running in Administrator Mode. On a locked-down work laptop this often fails, which is why CFA Institute recommends a personal computer.<\/li><li><strong>Internet:<\/strong>&nbsp;CFA Institute&#8217;s minimum is 1.0 Mbps download. Prometric now recommends 5.0 Mbps download and 0.5 Mbps upload. Use a wired Ethernet connection if you can. Mobile hotspots are not allowed for any reason.<\/li><li><strong>Webcam:<\/strong>&nbsp;640 x 480 minimum. Desktops need an external USB camera. Keyboard-mounted cameras are not permitted, and a phone cannot act as your webcam.<\/li><li><strong>Microphone and speakers:<\/strong>&nbsp;both must work. Set the volume before launch, because you cannot adjust it once ProProctor is running.<\/li><li><strong>Monitors:<\/strong>&nbsp;one screen only. Unplug every extra monitor. If you use a laptop with one external monitor, the laptop lid must stay closed and you must use an external camera, keyboard and mouse. CFA Institute recommends a 17-inch or larger monitor.<\/li><li><strong>Headphones:<\/strong>&nbsp;CFA Institute allows wired headphones and microphones. Earbuds and Bluetooth headsets are not allowed, and Bluetooth mice and keyboards are not supported.<\/li><li><strong>Power and docking:<\/strong>&nbsp;plug the computer directly into the wall and undock it. Prometric warns that docking stations cause connection problems.<\/li><li><strong>Screen settings:<\/strong>&nbsp;resolution at least 1024 x 768 (1920 x 1080 recommended) and display scaling at 100%.<\/li><li><strong>Browser settings:<\/strong>&nbsp;CFA Institute asks for the latest Google Chrome, pop-up blockers disabled and cookies enabled.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\"><p><strong>Exam Tip:<\/strong>&nbsp;Passing Prometric&#8217;s system check does not mean you meet the spec. CFA Institute points out that the check tests speed, webcam and microphone, but not firewalls, your browser or your OS version. Verify those three by hand, then run the system check on the same computer, network and room you will use on exam day. If anything changes afterward (an OS update, a new router), run it again.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"ID_Requirements\"><\/span>ID Requirements<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>You need one original, valid, unexpired, government-issued photo ID. CFA Institute gives driver&#8217;s license, passport and national ID card as examples. Photocopies and digital IDs are refused. The bigger trap is the name:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>The name in your CFA Institute account must match your ID&nbsp;<strong>exactly, in English characters<\/strong>. A nickname or shortened first name will get you turned away, even if it is obviously the same person.<\/li><li>The ID you present must show your name in English (Latin) characters. If your national ID card only shows your name in another script, use your passport.<\/li><li>Allowed differences are narrow: given name and surname reversed, accents present or missing, standard transliterations (such as \u00fc written as ue), hyphen and spacing differences, capitalization, and names truncated on the ID because of space.<\/li><li>If you are asked for a second ID, the name on both must match your registration.<\/li><li>CFA Institute does not say a second ID is always required. Check your Prometric confirmation email for the exact number of IDs&nbsp;(confirm on the official page).<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If your account name is wrong and you have never sat a CFA Institute exam, you can usually fix it yourself in the Passport Information section of your account. If you have sat a CFA Institute exam before, or the change is late, you must submit a request with a photo of your ID through CFA Institute Self Service. CFA Institute says it cannot guarantee requests made less than 30 days before the appointment will be processed, so check your name the day you register.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\"><p><strong>Exam Tip:<\/strong>&nbsp;For candidates outside English-speaking countries, the passport is almost always the safest ID. It shows your name in Latin characters and matches the &#8220;Passport Information&#8221; fields in your CFA account. Copy the name from the passport&#8217;s machine-readable line into your account exactly, including middle names.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Testing_Environment\"><\/span>Testing Environment<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Use a private, enclosed, walled room with the door closed for the entire exam. Close closet doors and any visible bathroom door too.<\/li><li>No glass-walled or frosted-glass rooms per CFA Institute&#8217;s OPT page. Cover windows and glass doors.<\/li><li>Light the room well and keep it quiet.<\/li><li>Clear the desk completely: no pens, paper, notebooks, books, phones, watches or other electronics.<\/li><li>Remove or cover anything with writing on the walls. Pictures without text can stay; a whiteboard with notes cannot. Keep a bedsheet handy to cover clutter if the agent asks.<\/li><li>Sit upright at a desk or table. No beds, sofas or laptop-on-lap setups.<\/li><li>Make sure no person or pet can enter the room until you finish.<\/li><li>Hang sweaters or jackets on your chair. Heavy coats must be out of the testing area.<\/li><li>You may keep two tissues, which the proctor will inspect.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Step-by-step_Check-in_Walkthrough\"><\/span>Step-by-step Check-in Walkthrough<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This sequence follows CFA Institute&#8217;s OPT page and the ProProctor Live process in Prometric&#8217;s user guide. The CFA exam uses live agents and proctors, so expect a person on video, not a fully automated check-in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol><li><strong>Install ProProctor and run the system check days before.<\/strong>&nbsp;Download the app from the Prometric candidate portal, enter your confirmation number and last name, and select Check My System. Sticking point: a work laptop&#8217;s firewall or IT policy blocks installation. Fix: switch to a personal computer now, not on exam day.<\/li><li><strong>Prepare the room 15 minutes before you launch.<\/strong>&nbsp;Prometric asks you to allow 15 minutes for this. Sticking point: forgetting the phone on the nightstand. Fix: physically carry the phone to another room before you sit down.<\/li><li><strong>Close every application through Task Manager (Windows) or Force Quit (Mac).<\/strong>&nbsp;CFA Institute asks you to fully close apps, not just minimize them. Mac users must also turn off notifications. Sticking point: Teams, Zoom or a webcam utility holding the camera. Fix: quit them completely; Prometric says this prevents camera connection errors.<\/li><li><strong>Launch the exam no earlier than 60 minutes before your start time.<\/strong>&nbsp;Use the link in your confirmation email or the ProProctor launch page, and have your confirmation number ready. CFA Institute warns the launch process can take up to 15 minutes. Sticking point: starting at the appointment time and running out of buffer. Fix: launch 30 to 45 minutes early.<\/li><li><strong>Pass the final system check.<\/strong>&nbsp;ProProctor re-checks your system before going further. Sticking point: a VPN or antivirus that switched itself back on. Fix: disable it and relaunch.<\/li><li><strong>Take your face photo.<\/strong>&nbsp;Line your face up with the on-screen guides. Sticking point: blurry or backlit photo. Fix: face a light source, not a window behind you, and retake until it is sharp.<\/li><li><strong>Take a photo of your ID.<\/strong>&nbsp;Hold it inside the on-screen frame so all text is readable. Sticking point: glare on a laminated card or passport page. Fix: tilt it slightly away from the light. If the photos do not appear to match, a readiness agent checks manually.<\/li><li><strong>Meet the readiness agent on video.<\/strong>&nbsp;The agent confirms your email, address and exam details, and may ask your gender preference for the proctor. All communication is in English. Sticking point: waiting for an agent to connect. Fix: stay seated and in view; do not relaunch unless told to.<\/li><li><strong>Do the environment scan.<\/strong>&nbsp;Lift the laptop or webcam and slowly show the desk top, under the desk, the floor, your chair (top, underneath and back) and a full 360-degree view of the walls. Sticking point: a fixed desktop webcam on a short cable. Fix: use a webcam with a long USB cable, or a laptop. Prometric&#8217;s older guide also recommends a medium-to-large mirror.<\/li><li><strong>Do the security scan of yourself.<\/strong>&nbsp;Expect to show your head and behind your ears, hands and arms, clothing, and glasses. Turn pockets inside out, roll sleeves above your wrists and pull long hair back. Remove hats, large jewelry, hair accessories and anything Bluetooth.<\/li><li><strong>Start the exam screens.<\/strong>&nbsp;You move through candidate confirmation, the non-disclosure agreement and the 16-minute tutorial before the 140-minute exam clock starts. Read the screens carefully so you know when the tutorial ends and the scored exam begins.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\"><p><strong>Exam Tip:<\/strong>&nbsp;The 60-minute launch window cuts both ways. You cannot launch earlier than 60 minutes before your start time, and CFA Institute says you cannot start the launch process 60 minutes after it. Logging in late may also get you refused admission, and your fee is not refunded. Treat your start time as the latest moment you can still be finishing check-in, not the time you begin.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_the_Proctor_Looks_for_During_the_Room_Scan\"><\/span>What the Proctor Looks for During the Room Scan<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The agent is checking one thing: whether anything in the room could help you answer a question or let someone help you. In practice that means they look for written material (sticky notes, whiteboards, posters with text, books on shelves within reach), devices (phones, tablets, smartwatches, a second screen, a TV on the wall), and people or pets. They look under the desk and behind the chair because that is where candidates leave phones. They check your ears for earpieces and your glasses for built-in cameras. Smart glasses are prohibited outright under CFA Institute&#8217;s belongings policy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If the agent cannot tell what something on the wall is, CFA Institute says they may ask you to take it down, or photograph the wall if it cannot be removed. Agree and comply quickly; arguing costs check-in time. Move the camera slowly. A fast pan produces a blurry scan and the agent will simply ask you to repeat it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Rules_During_the_Exam\"><\/span>Rules During the Exam<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>CFA Institute does not publish a formal list of &#8220;warning&#8221; versus &#8220;termination&#8221; offenses for this exam. The split below reflects how Prometric describes proctor authority and what CFA Institute names as misconduct.
