CompTIA lists it as English only, with the same 90-minute duration, the same 750 passing score and a maximum of 90 questions. Everything below applies to the online delivery rules CompTIA publishes for its exams in general, but your appointment confirmation email is the final word on which exam you booked.

Exam Tip: Open your appointment confirmation and read the exam code. If you studied for SY0-701 and you rebook or reschedule around mid-November, make sure the booking did not move to SY0-801. Studying the wrong objectives is a far more expensive mistake than any check-in problem.

Where online testing is not available

OnVUE is not available everywhere. CompTIA’s current online-proctored guidelines say it is not available to candidates from Cuba, Iran, North Korea, Sudan, Syria, Russia, Belarus and certain Ukrainian territories. Pearson’s CompTIA page lists a slightly different set of restricted places (Belarus, Cuba, Iran, North Korea, Russia, Syria and restricted regions of Ukraine). An older CompTIA online-testing page also named China, South Korea, Slovenia and Sudan. These lists do not agree, so check your country with the system test and with Pearson VUE customer service before you pay for a voucher (confirm on the official page).

Two more region rules matter if you travel or work abroad. The Candidate Agreement says you must register with an address in the country where you live at the time of testing, and take the exam in that same country. You must also use your own computer and your own internet connection for a remote exam. Both rules are enforced with technical location checks.

Pre-Exam Preparation

Hardware and Network Requirements

Do all of this on the exact computer and network you will use on exam day. A system test that passes at your office tells you nothing about your living room.

Use Windows 10 or later, or a recent macOS. Pearson’s CompTIA page says macOS 14 or higher, while CompTIA’s own guidelines say macOS 13 or higher. If you are on macOS 13, treat the system test as the deciding authority (confirm on the official page).

Do not use a virtual machine or a beta operating system.

Have a working webcam, microphone and speaker. Headphones, headsets and earbuds are not allowed.

Connect only one display. Unplug and power down any second monitor, and disconnect any touchscreen. If a screen cannot be removed, Pearson says to disconnect and cover it.

Use a stable connection with at least 6 Mbps download and 2 Mbps upload.

Do not use a VPN, a corporate network, or a public or shared network. Ask everyone on your home network not to stream video or download large files during your slot.

Close every application except OnVUE, and restart the computer before you start.

Keep your phone out of arm’s reach once check-in is done. CompTIA’s older online-testing page says you will need a phone for check-in, which fits Pearson’s usual photo flow (confirm on the official page).

Remove watches (including smartwatches), smart glasses, styluses and any other connected device from the desk area.

Exam Tip: A work laptop is the classic trap. It often runs a VPN, a managed firewall or security software that blocks OnVUE, and it breaks the personal computer and personal network rule. Borrow or use a personal machine instead, and run the system test on it at least a day early.

ID Requirements

Here the official pages disagree with each other, so read this section carefully. CompTIA’s online-proctored guidelines and Pearson’s OnVUE page both describe a single valid government-issued photo ID. CompTIA’s Candidate ID Policy, which is the vendor’s own rule, says you need two original, unexpired IDs: a primary ID and a secondary ID. Follow the vendor: bring two.

Primary ID: government-issued, with your name and a recent, recognizable photo. For online testing the accepted types are an international passport, a plastic driver’s license, a national, state or provincial ID card, and an alien registration card (green card, permanent resident or visa). Certain Aadhaar cards are accepted under Pearson’s Aadhaar policy.

Secondary ID: any ID that shows at least your name and signature, or your name and a recent, recognizable photo. An employee or student ID counts only if it has your photo, your first and last name, the organization’s name or logo, and is a plastic card, laminated, or has an embossed or stamped photo. Check your exact card against the official wording before you rely on it (confirm on the official page).

Not accepted for OnVUE: expired, digital, damaged, copied or privately issued IDs, birth certificates, naturalization papers, and IDs that cannot legally be photographed. That includes U.S. military IDs and secure access cards such as the Common Access Card. Pearson’s page also mentions non-U.S. military IDs as acceptable, but CompTIA’s online ID table does not list military IDs, so do not use one online.

Paper IDs are accepted only in Algeria, Brazil, Cameroon and the Dominican Republic.

Name matching

The first and last name you used to register must match exactly the first and last name on both IDs you show. Compare spelling, hyphens and the order of given name and family name, character by character, before exam day. The official policy talks about first and last names only; it does not spell out how middle names, accents or name order are treated, so if your name has any of those quirks, ask Pearson VUE customer service in writing before your appointment (confirm on the official page).

If your registered name is wrong, fix your profile first. Any exception to the ID policy has to be approved by Pearson VUE at least three business days before your appointment, so a name problem you discover on exam morning cannot be solved on exam morning.

Which ID to use if you are testing outside the US

CompTIA’s rule is that the IDs must be issued by the country where you are testing. Use the primary ID issued by that country (a national ID card or driver’s license) plus a secondary ID. If you do not have a qualifying primary ID from the country where you are testing, for example because you work abroad, you need a passport from your country of citizenship plus a secondary ID. A local-language ID that is not in Roman characters is accepted only if it was issued by the country you are testing in. Your name must still match your registration, so ask Pearson VUE how a non-Roman name will be compared before you book (confirm on the official page).

Exam Tip: Photograph both IDs with your phone a few days early under the lamp you will use on exam day. If glare hides the name or photo on a laminated card, you will find out now instead of during check-in.

Testing Environment

Test in a private, quiet, well-lit room. Not a bathroom, and not a public space such as an office, library or coffee shop.

Be fully dressed before you start check-in. Upper and lower body must be covered at all times.

Clear the desk completely. Only the exam computer and items pre-approved for CompTIA’s program are allowed.

Remove books, notes, scrap paper, pens, pencils, food, drinks, smoking products, tissues, towels and handkerchiefs, and put them beyond arm’s reach. Pearson also lists bags, wallets, coats, glasses cases, makeup and weapons.

Clear any whiteboards or note boards in the room.

Make sure nobody can see your screen, even from a distance, and that nobody enters the room. That includes pets.

Tell your household your exam time. Interruptions lead to revocation.

Step-by-Step Check-in Walkthrough

Pearson and CompTIA describe the main parts of check-in (technology checks, photos of you and your ID, photos and a scan of your room, then the proctor), but neither page publishes a screen-by-screen script. The on-screen order can shift slightly, so follow the prompts you see (confirm on the official page).

Log in 30 minutes early and launch your exam. Sign in through your CompTIA and Pearson VUE account, open your scheduled exam, and launch it from My Exams. You will be asked to accept the CompTIA Candidate Agreement. Sticking point: starting at your appointment time instead of 30 minutes before. Fix: set a calendar alarm for 35 minutes before, because CompTIA will not let you test if you are more than 15 minutes late.

Pass the technology checks. OnVUE tests your webcam, microphone, speakers and network. Sticking point: a VPN, a second display or a background app causes a failure. Fix: close everything except OnVUE, disconnect extra screens, switch the VPN off, and restart if it will not pass.

Take your own photo. Your face and ears must be fully visible: no hat, hood, scarf, headphones or earbuds. Sticking point: a dark room or a backlit window. Fix: put a lamp in front of you and the window behind the camera.

Photograph your IDs. Have both original IDs in hand. Sticking point: glare, a cut-off edge, or a name that does not match your registration. Fix: hold the card flat under soft light, and if the name is wrong, stop and contact Pearson VUE customer service rather than guess.

Photograph your room. CompTIA requires four photos of your exam space during check-in, and Pearson describes a 360-degree room scan. Sticking point: you cannot move your computer around the room. Fix: if the app lets you, use the phone it prompts you to use for the photos, which is the usual OnVUE approach (confirm on the official page), and clear the room before you start so each photo is clean.

Wait for the proctor. A greeter or proctor reviews your photos and may tell you to remove objects or repeat the scan. Sticking point: you are tempted to argue or ignore a request. Fix: do exactly what is asked. Ignoring a greeter’s or proctor’s instruction to remove objects or to complete the room scan is a listed violation. Official pages do not state a typical wait time.

Start the exam. Stay seated and follow the on-screen and spoken instructions. Sticking point: reading the instruction screens out loud, which is not allowed. Fix: read silently, and use the chat button if you need the proctor.

Finish properly. Stay seated for the post-exam survey and your score screen. Do not photograph or write down your results. Close the OnVUE application completely before you leave your seat.

What the Proctor Looks For During the Room Scan

The room photos and scan exist so a proctor can confirm that your space meets CompTIA’s criteria and that nothing in it can help you. If a proctor sees something odd later, CompTIA says additional room scans may be required during the exam, so a clean room at check-in does not end the checking.

Your desk: empty apart from the exam computer. Nothing on it, under it or within arm’s reach.

Writing surfaces: whiteboards, note boards and paper. Clear them before you begin.

Electronics: extra monitors, touchscreens, tablets, phones, smart devices and anything with recording or AI features. Pearson says to disconnect them and cover any that cannot be removed.

Other people and pets: nobody else may be present, visible or audible during the session.

Screen visibility: nobody should be able to see your screen, even from a distance.

The room itself: a private space, not a bathroom or public area.

You: fully dressed, face and ears in view.

Rules During the Exam

CompTIA does not publish a formal “warning list.” The official pages describe behaviors that can get your exam terminated, and they say violations can lead to revocation, invalidated results and a permanent ban. I have split the behaviors below by how the sources word them, but assume any of them can end your attempt (confirm on the official page).

Tier 1: Behaviors That Can Bring a Proctor Intervention

These are the slips most candidates make by accident. CompTIA says maintaining eye contact with your screen matters and that looking away may result in termination.

Speaking or reading aloud, including instruction screens, the Candidate Agreement and exam questions.

Covering your face or ears, or wearing a hat, hood, scarf or headphones.

Leaving objects within reach after the greeter has told you to clear them.

Tier 2: Behaviors That Lead to Termination, Invalidation or a Ban

Appearing on camera without being fully dressed.

Letting anyone, or any pet, enter or be visible in your space, even briefly.

Using your phone or any other electronic device, or communicating with anyone off camera.

Getting help from another person, or letting someone else take or view your exam.

Leaving the webcam view or the room without a pre-approved accommodation.

Recording, screenshotting, transcribing, photographing or sharing exam content, during or after the exam.

Using any AI software, program or app during the exam, or to recreate the exam.

Running unauthorized software in the background or tampering with your computer or network.

Reusing a laptop or workstation that other candidates have used. CompTIA says candidates found sharing a device across multiple attempts may face score revocation and a suspension.

Using braindump or leaked exam material. You are also required to report it if you were exposed to it, even by accident.

What the consequences look like

Under the Candidate Agreement, CompTIA may revoke the certification for the exam in question, and may revoke all your other CompTIA certifications. It may also bar you from registering for any CompTIA exam for a minimum of six calendar months, and withhold refunds. You receive a written notice of the violations and sanctions. You can file an appeal in writing, using the Candidate Appeals Form, within 30 calendar days of that notice. The appeal goes to a three-member panel whose decision is final. The appeal process does not cover failing scores, challenges to individual questions, or sanctions that result from data forensics. Separately, if CompTIA classifies a score as indeterminate, you can retake the exam at no cost. A manual rescore request goes through a ticket at the CompTIA Help Center.

Rules on Breaks, Scratch Paper and Drinks

CompTIA exams are built to be taken in one sitting with no scheduled breaks, online or at a test center. Use the restroom before you start check-in. If you leave the camera view, you risk termination, unless you have a documented, pre-approved accommodation from Pearson VUE’s accommodations team. Accommodations cannot be added once the exam has started, so request them before you schedule.

For notes, you get the OnVUE digital whiteboard and nothing else. Pens, pencils, paper, physical whiteboards and note cards are not allowed. Some other programs on OnVUE allow breaks or physical writing materials, but CompTIA does not, so ignore advice from friends who sat a different vendor’s exam.

Drinks are where the two sets of rules disagree. Pearson’s general OnVUE page says a beverage in an unmarked container may stay on the desk. CompTIA’s own guidelines tell you to remove food and drinks and keep them beyond arm’s reach. Follow CompTIA, the vendor: no drink on or near the desk. Drink before you log in, and plan on 90 minutes without one.

Exam Tip: Practice with the digital whiteboard if you rely on scribbling out subnet math or acronyms. It is a different feel from paper, and you will not get a physical backup.

One extra allowance: CompTIA gives a 30-minute English as a Second Language extension for exams delivered in English in non-English-speaking countries where a localized version is not available. It is granted automatically in eligible countries when you register through Pearson VUE (confirm on the official page).

Online Proctored vs. Test Center

Item

Online (OnVUE)

Test center

Where you test

A private room you set up yourself

A Pearson VUE test center

Equipment

Your own computer, webcam, microphone and network

Center computer; sites have webcams and electronic signature pads

Accepted military ID

Not accepted (restricted IDs cannot be photographed)

Accepted as a primary ID under CompTIA’s test center policy

Identity checks

Photos of you, your IDs and your room; session recorded by webcam and microphone

ID checked on arrival; candidate photographed

Breaks

None, except a pre-approved accommodation

None scheduled, except a pre-approved accommodation

Note-taking

Digital whiteboard only

Writing materials are provided by the center (confirm on the official page)

Reschedule or cancel

Up until the scheduled start time

At least one full business day (24 hours) before

Availability

Not available in some countries

Wherever Pearson VUE centers exist

Online suits you if you have a quiet room you control, a personal computer, a stable connection and a clean desk, and you want to skip the travel. A test center suits you if your home is noisy or shared, your internet is unreliable, you only have a work laptop, your only ID is a military or secure-access card, or you simply do not want to be recorded in your home. The proctor can chat with you but cannot fix your connection or add time. The official pages do not say how the exam clock is treated during a disconnect, so do not assume the timer pauses (confirm on the official page).

Can I use my laptop’s built-in webcam?

The requirement is a working webcam, microphone and speaker, and the pages do not demand an external camera. A built-in webcam that passes the system test should be fine. Make sure the screen is angled so the camera sees your face and ears (confirm on the official page).

What if check-in times out or I am late?

Start 30 minutes early, because CompTIA says you will not be allowed to test if you are more than 15 minutes late. Pearson says that if any check-in requirement is not met you cannot test and the exam fee is forfeited. The pages do not describe what happens when the check-in clock expires partway through, so contact Pearson VUE customer service at once if that occurs (confirm on the official page).

What if the name on my ID does not match my registration?

Do not try your luck at check-in. CompTIA requires an exact match on first and last name on both IDs. Fix your profile or contact Pearson VUE customer service well ahead, and remember that ID exceptions must be approved at least three business days before the appointment.

Can I use my work laptop?

It is risky. The Candidate Agreement requires a personal computer and a personal network connection for remote exams, and OnVUE does not allow corporate networks or VPNs.

Can I take a restroom break or drink water?

No. There are no scheduled breaks, and leaving the camera view without an approved accommodation can end your exam. CompTIA also tells you to keep drinks out of arm’s reach.

What if I fail?

There is no waiting period between your first and second attempt. Before a third attempt, you must wait at least 14 calendar days from your last attempt. You pay the exam price for every attempt, and CompTIA does not offer free retests or retake discounts, although some bundles include a retake voucher (confirm on the official page).

Sources and Policy Pages

Official Pages and Reference Links

References

CompTIA Security+ V7 (SY0-701) exam details

CompTIA Security+ V8 (SY0-801) exam details and launch date

CompTIA Online-Proctored Exam Guidelines

CompTIA Candidate ID Policy

CompTIA Candidate Testing Policies (breaks, rescheduling, rescoring)

CompTIA Candidate Agreement (conduct, violations, appeals)

CompTIA Certification Retake Policy

CompTIA Exam Delivery Policies (OnVUE exceptions)

CompTIA online testing overview (older page, used for the country list)

Pearson VUE: CompTIA online exams with OnVUE

Pearson VUE: online proctoring overview

OnVUE system test for CompTIA

Pearson VUE test accommodations

CompTIA Help Center: identification requirements

<div class='sfsi_Sicons' style='width: 100%;
