Pre-Upgrade Planning &amp; Prerequisites<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Before touching the TMOS shell or GUI, do the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"21_Health_Checks_Backups\"><\/span>2.1. License Verification<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>F5 images often include a <strong>license check date<\/strong>, which your license file must meet or exceed. If your license is out of date, the upgraded volume won\u2019t load your config . To verify:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-code\"><code class=\"\">bash\n<code>tmsh show sys license<\/code><\/code><\/pre>\n\n\n\n<p>If the <strong>Service Check Date<\/strong> in your license is older than the <strong>License Check Date<\/strong> baked into the new TMOS image, <strong>reactivate<\/strong> your license before upgrading.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"23_Maintenance_Window_Stakeholders\"><\/span>2.3. Maintenance Window &amp; Stakeholders<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><strong>Notify<\/strong> application owners and network operations of the expected impact.<\/li><li><strong>Schedule<\/strong> a maintenance window long enough for two reboots (standalone) or two failover cycles (HA).<\/li><li><strong>Ensure<\/strong> console (serial, iLO, DRAC) access is ready\u2014SSH alone may not be sufficient if network settings change.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>These steps are part of the \u201cPlan of Action\u201d originally laid out in community best practices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"3_Downloading_Uploading_the_TMOS_Image\"><\/span>3. Downloading &amp; Uploading the TMOS Image<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ol><li><strong>Download<\/strong> the ISO from F5\u2019s support portal.<\/li><li><strong>Verify<\/strong> the MD5 or SHA256 checksum matches the F5-published value.<\/li><li><strong>Upload<\/strong> to your BIG-IP:  On Windows, you can use WinSCP to transfer the ISO to <code>\/shared\/images\/<\/code>.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-code\"><code class=\"\">bash\nscp BIGIP-16.X.X-0.0.X.iso root@&lt;BIG-IP-management-scp BIGIP-16.X.X-0.0.X.iso root@&lt;BIG-IP-management-IP>:\/shared\/images\/<\/code><\/pre>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"4_Installing_the_Image_to_a_New_Volume\"><\/span>4. Installing the Image to a New Volume<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>You can use <strong>tmsh<\/strong> on both standalone and HA systems:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-code\"><code class=\"\">bash\n<code>tmsh\nsys software image install BIGIP-16.X.X-0.0.X.iso volume HD1.X<\/code><\/code><\/pre>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><strong><code>volume HD1.X<\/code><\/strong> specifies the target boot volume; if omitted, tmsh chooses the next available volume.<\/li><li>The system <strong>imports<\/strong> your running config into the new volume automatically.<\/li><li><strong>Do not<\/strong> reboot yet if you intend to perform the install on a standby device in an HA pair.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>This CLI-based approach ensures you get exactly the same process every time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"5_HA_Upgrades_Standby_First_Then_Active\"><\/span>5. HA Upgrades: Standby First, Then Active<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>To minimize downtime in a <strong>High Availability<\/strong> (Active\/Standby) pair:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><strong>Identify<\/strong> the standby unit: <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-code\"><code class=\"\">bash\ntmsh show cm failover-status<\/code><\/pre>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><strong>Install<\/strong> the new image on <strong>standby<\/strong> (see Section 4).<\/li><li><strong>Reboot<\/strong> standby into the new volume: <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-code\"><code class=\"\">bash\ntmsh reboot volume HD1.X<\/code><\/pre>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><strong>Validate<\/strong> that the standby comes up cleanly, syncs config, and passes smoke tests (virtual servers, pools).<\/li><li><strong>Force failover<\/strong>\u2014make the upgraded node <strong>Active<\/strong>: <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-code\"><code class=\"\">bash\ntmsh run cm failover standby<\/code><\/pre>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><strong>Install<\/strong> and <strong>reboot<\/strong> the former active (now standby) unit.<\/li><li><strong>Fail back<\/strong> if desired, or leave the new node active once both sides are on the same version.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>This zero-or-minimal-downtime workflow is the heart of the community Plan of Action, and matches F5\u2019s official HA upgrade guide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"6_Post-Upgrade_Validation\"><\/span>6. Post-Upgrade Validation<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>After both nodes are on the new TMOS image:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><strong>Verify version<\/strong>: <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-code\"><code class=\"\">bash\ntmsh show sys version<\/code><\/pre>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><strong>Check config sync<\/strong>: <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-code\"><code class=\"\">bash\ntmsh show cm sync-status<\/code><\/pre>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><strong>Test traffic flows<\/strong> against key Virtual Servers (LTM) or DNS zones (GTM).<\/li><li><strong>Monitor logs<\/strong> (<code>\/var\/log\/ltm<\/code>, <code>\/var\/log\/audit<\/code>) for errors or unexpected errors.<\/li><li><strong>Confirm<\/strong> custom iRules, SSL profiles, and certificates are intact.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Only once you\u2019ve signed off on these checks should you consider the upgrade complete.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"7_Rollback_Plan\"><\/span>7. Rollback Plan<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If you detect failures or incompatibilities:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><strong>Reboot<\/strong> the affected unit back to the <strong>previous<\/strong> volume: <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-code\"><code class=\"\">bash\ntmsh reboot volume HD1.Y<\/code><\/pre>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><strong>Re-sync<\/strong> configuration from the working peer (HA), or restore your UCS (standalone).<\/li><li><strong>Investigate<\/strong> upgrade logs under <code>\/var\/log\/upgrade\/<\/code> for root-cause analysis.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Because you never deleted the old boot volume, rollback is trivial and fast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"8_Automating_with_BIG-IQ_or_REST_API\"><\/span>8.
