GUI-Based Disabling<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"21_Remove_Application_Control_Profiles_from_Policies\"><\/span>2.1 Remove Application Control Profiles from Policies<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ol><li><strong>Log in<\/strong> to the FortiGate GUI (<code>https:\/\/&lt;firewall-ip&gt;<\/code>).<\/li><li>Navigate to <strong>Policy &amp; Objects \u2192 IPv4 Policy<\/strong> (or <strong>IPv6 Policy<\/strong>).<\/li><li>For each policy you wish to \u201cclose\u201d:<ul><li>Click <strong>Edit<\/strong>, scroll to the <strong>Security Profiles<\/strong> section.<\/li><li>Under <strong>Application Control<\/strong>, switch the dropdown from your active profile to <strong>\u2013<\/strong> (None).<\/li><li>If you\u2019re not using other UTM features (IPS, Web Filter), set <strong>Security Profiles<\/strong> altogether to <strong>Off<\/strong>.<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>Click <strong>OK<\/strong> and repeat for all applicable policies.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>This approach leaves the Application Control feature fully intact on the device (you can re-enable it at any time) but ensures that sessions matching those policies do not undergo DPI inspection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"22_Globally_Disable_the_Engine\"><\/span>2.2 Globally Disable the Engine<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In FortiOS 7.6 and later, you can disable the Application Control DPI engine globally:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol><li>Go to <strong>Security Profiles \u2192 Application Control<\/strong>.<\/li><li>In the main pane, click <strong>Disable Application Control Engine<\/strong> at the top\u2014this switch turns off all signature scanning across the unit.<\/li><li><strong>Save<\/strong> your changes.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\"><p><strong>Note:<\/strong> Not all FortiOS versions provide a single \u201cglobal disable\u201d toggle. New sessions bypass the DPI engine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"32_Global_Engine_Shutdown_FortiOS_76\"><\/span>3.2 Global Engine Shutdown (FortiOS 7.6+)<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-code\"><code class=\"\">config system global\r\n    set app-control-engine disable\r\nend\r<\/code><\/pre>\n\n\n\n<p>If supported, this parameter stops the engine entirely. All policies, even those referencing profiles, will no longer inspect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"4_Automating_with_Ansible\"><\/span>4. Automating with Ansible<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If you manage many FortiGates or hundreds of policies, Ansible\u2019s <code>fortios_application_list<\/code> module can toggle your profiles en masse. If you require that feature, plan an upgrade path to FortiOS 7.6 or later.<\/li><li><strong>Subscription Renewal<\/strong><br>Disabling Application Control does not affect your FortiGuard subscription.
